Following a recent worldwide recall of the Galaxy Note 7 phones by South Korean electronic device maker Samsung and various measures adopted by airlines worldwide, Transport Malta has recently issued a recommendation to ship-owners and operators of Maltese registered ships to carry out an analysis of the risks that might arise from use of such devices.
Transport Malta invited Shipowners to consider laying down appropriate instructions to passengers and crew carrying such devices on board, which may include:
i. Informing all persons about the use and carriage of such devices when booking a passage or a cruise;
ii. Turning off the phone;
iii. Disconnecting the device from charging;
iv. Stopping all applications that could activate the phone;
v. Keeping the device at close proximity; and
vi. Placing warning signs in the garage decks, accommodation areas and on the relevant websites.
